Chapter Six

It was exactly 07:15 AM, precisely 15 minutes after Thurman gave Peter the order to gather the staff for the emergency meeting. They were all seated in their pre chosen seats, forming one small circle with a short round table in the centre. An old, somewhat large clock that hanged on a thick rusted screw close to the ceiling, pierced Peter’s head with every click. Melissa Yost was seated near the thin kitchen wall, and was nervously swinging her crossed right leg. Peter was close to her, almost feeling the turbulent air she was kicking. He was crackling his finger joints restlessly, imagining the worst case scenario. Kal was also invited to the meeting, it was his first time. He was seated close to the entrance of the room, where the texidermied Siberian Tiger used to stand. Thurman had it removed from his room, as upon falling to the ground, after being slammed with the door and all the mess which had occurred the night before, it didn’t resemble the Amur Tiger anymore, but some twisted fabric which held numerous broken pieces inside of it. To his left and right, for security reasons, Sam and Floyd were seated, exchanging indignant glances every now and then. Dorothy, who was leaning against the padded arm of a sofa, left of Peter, seemed to be in agony. She made a woeful grimace after hearing Roger had escaped into the woods in the middle of the night. Melissa glared at her, twisting her chapped lips, ‘What a pathetic little whore.’ She murmured to herself. Doctor Antonio, who would glance at Peter, then shift his gaze to Kal, as if in desperate need for a private conversation, didn’t even notice Dorothy, who was on his right, moaning silently from time to time. Finally, between Doctor Antonio and Sam, there were two seats, one occupied by the Hospital’s chef, Richard Gibbins, while the last one was vacant. As Sam was closest to the door, he was the first to notice Thurman’s tromping. He briskly raised his hand and snapped his fingers twice. Dead silence engulfed the room. Thurman elegantly opened the door, showing his half swollen, bruised face, decorated with a small bulge in the centre of his forehead. They were stunned by his terrorizing stare. He almost silently closed the door and took a seat, finally completing the circle. Thurman cleared his throat, unbuttoned his tuxedo and danced his eyes from Peter to Floyd.

‘Sam,’ he called with a low but deep voice, while staring at Peter, ‘I learned that the giant helped you accomplish your journey to the warehouse, is that true?’

‘Yes sir that is true,’ he cleared his throat which had dried out, ‘though when we arrived to the previously jammed tunnel hatch, we came to a conclusion that a thick tree, which stood right next to the hatch, had for some unknown reason fallen down…’
